Background During his professional career, Jim has amassed a wide range of experience, within the utilities sector, encompassing the following milestones: - 1974 – Jim graduates with a B.Sc. honours degree in Computing with Operational Research. He joins the South of Scotland Electricity Board (now ScottishPower) as graduate trainee. Jim’s career progresses quickly within ScottishPower where he develops systems for energy trading and power systems analysis.
- 1984 – Joins Scottish Hydro-Electric (now Scottish and Southern Energy) as the IT development manager within the Information Services division. Within this role Jim establishes the strategic direction to deliver client/server systems using oracle, forging a partnership with Vision Consulting to transfer skills and establishing a joint venture company.
- 1995 - Jim holds a director’s position at Vision Consulting (until 1998), while retaining his position as customer relationship manager at Scottish Hydro-Electric.
- 1996 – Jim becomes the business systems manager for power systems. Here, Jim was responsible for all IS and IT investment, focusing on business change management, programme management, and strategic project delivery.
- 1999 – Jim is promoted to major projects manager as Scottish and Southern Electric following the merger between Scottish Hydro-Electric and Southern energy.
- 2000 – Joins Real Time as director of utilities.
